Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
